Tango
"Tango is a social dance that connects people in different ways."
The history of Tango begins on the banks of the Río de la Plata in the second half of the 19th century, the time of European immigrants. Buenos Aires is now considered the birthplace of Tango. Many of the immigrants who came from Spain, Italy and Eastern Europe, among others, settled in the slums in the periphery of Buenos Aires. This is exactly where the new music emerged, which spread in the brothels and on the outskirts of the city and was disreputable to the upper classes. At the turn of the century, La Boca was the centre of tango. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that Tango became socially acceptable in Argentina. Since 2009, Tango has been one of the masterpieces of the oral and immaterial heritage of humanity (UNESCO).
The tango courses at the Studentenwerk Göttingen are led by Matías Guinazú. He comes from Argentina and teaches Tango at the University of Göttingen and at the Tangowerkstatt in Hanover. He is also a visiting teacher in various cities and performs Tango shows. His education is about sharing the fun of dancing. He combines traditional roots with modern Tango movement qualities.
